Smidsrød Helsehus

”Through architectural inspiration and a unique fabric and material selection we worked to change the concept from a “home for the ill”. Instead we transformed it into a “home for wellbeing” where activity is the objective”

Functionality and excellent visual design

Challenge and solution
Smidsrod Helsehus provides preventive health care, and many different types of treatments for patients in rehabilitation. With this broad range of services, it is a workplace for many professionals, including medical doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and healthcare professionals. This was the starting point in the planning of the building and interior design. To function optimally and ensure an efficient operation.

The solution was a holistic approach with light and modern feel. The materials and colours of the furniture were chosen based on a colour palette for the entire house and for the various zones’ identity. Important for the design is to reflect the users' aim to get well and to reflect the surroundings.

It has been an important focus on selecting flexible furniture, with high standards. We chose colours in the public areas, and a more subdued palette in the patient rooms, to get a more home-like atmosphere. The design is based on the building's location in a landscape between green fields and the sea.
